Moeraki Boulders: New Zealand’s Mysterious Coastal Wonders 🪨🌊

Ever seen giant, perfectly round boulders scattered along a beach? The Moeraki Boulders on Koekohe Beach, Otago are one of New Zealand’s most fascinating natural wonders, and they look like something straight out of a sci-fi movie!

These massive, almost perfectly spherical stones have been sitting here for millions of years, shaped by time, tide, and a little geological magic. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or curious traveller, this spot is a must-visit!

🔍 What Makes the Moeraki Boulders Special?

Natural Giants 🪨

Some of these boulders are up to 2 meters wide and weigh several tonnes! They formed over 60 million years ago, created by the slow accumulation of mud, minerals, and sediment—kind of like a pearl forming in an oyster.

Māori Legend 🌿

According to Māori tradition, the boulders are calabashes (gourds), kumara, and eel baskets that washed ashore from the legendary canoe Araiteuru, which was wrecked along the Otago coast.

Epic Photo Spot 📸

The boulders look incredible at sunrise or sunset, with the soft light making them even more mystical and dramatic. Bonus: If you visit at low tide, you’ll see more boulders exposed!

Wildlife & Coastal Beauty 🦭🌊

Koekohe Beach is also home to seals, seabirds, and sometimes even penguins! The waves crashing against the rocks add to the beach’s raw, rugged beauty.

Easy to Visit 🚗

The boulders are just a 40-minute drive from Oamaru or 1 hour from Dunedin, making them a great stop on a South Island Road trip! There’s also a café nearby where you can grab a coffee with a view.
