Pororari River Track: A West Coast Wonderland 🌿🏞️
Just a few minutes’ walk from the famous Pancake Rocks, the Pororari River Track is a serene escape into the lush, green heart of Paparoa National Park. With its soaring limestone cliffs, mirror-like waters, and Jurassic-style rainforest, this walk feels like stepping into another world — one where time slows down and nature takes centre stage.
It’s a must-do if you’re in Punakaiki — and trust me, your camera will love it too.
Getting There 🚗🗺️
The trailhead is super easy to find. From Punakaiki village, follow the signs to the Pororari River car park, just off SH6. There’s ample parking, and the walk begins with a charming little bridge over the river — the perfect photo op to start your adventure.
The Track Itself 🚶♀️🌿
Walk Among Giants
🕐 Duration: 1 to 2.5 hours return (depending how far you go)
🥾 Difficulty: Easy to moderate
📏 Distance: ~7 km return to the viewpoint and back
The trail meanders gently through dense native bush, with tall nikau palms, ferns, and beech trees lining your path. All the while, the Pororari River flows beside you, its calm waters reflecting the surrounding cliffs like a mirror.
The limestone gorge section is a real highlight — sheer walls rise dramatically around you, and the sound of birdsong echoes through the forest.
Loop Option
If you’re keen on a longer day hike, you can combine this track with the Pancake Rocks Track and the Punakaiki River Track to form a scenic loop — ideal for experienced walkers with a few more hours to spare.
Top Moments 📸✨
Instagram Tip: The old wooden bridge at the start of the track is magic at golden hour.
Look Up: Watch for kererū (wood pigeons) crashing through the treetops, and cheeky fantails fluttering by.
Water Spotting: The river is often clear and glassy — perfect for dreamy reflections.

Why I Loved It 💚
The Pororari River Track isn’t just a walk — it’s an experience. It’s where you find yourself stopping every few minutes, just to take it all in. The track is well-maintained but still wild enough to feel off-the-grid. For solo travellers, couples, or families, this walk delivers serious “wow” with minimal effort.
