Fiordland National Park: The Wilderness Playground 🚤🌌

If you haven’t heard of Fiordland National Park, prepare to have your mind blown. This UNESCO World Heritage area is like nothing else, with fjords that look straight out of a fantasy novel. Milford Sound is the crown jewel here, and a boat cruise through this iconic fjord is an absolute must. Imagine being surrounded by sheer rock walls, misty waterfalls, and (if you’re lucky) dolphins playing alongside the boat. It’s the kind of moment that makes you feel alive.

And for the hardcore adventurers, there’s the Milford Track and Routeburn Track, both multi-day hikes that take you through alpine wonderlands, mirror-like lakes, and dramatic mountain views. Be ready for some challenging climbs and jaw-dropping scenery—this is what New Zealand hiking dreams are made of! 🥾🏔️

The Coastline: A Wildlife Wonderland 🐧🌊

Southland’s coast is a paradise for wildlife lovers. The Catlins Coast is my personal favourite, with beaches where you can watch yellow-eyed penguins waddling ashore, lush rainforest trails, and epic waterfalls like McLean Falls that are hidden gems all their own. Driving along the coast, you’ll come across rugged cliffs and secluded bays, each with its own wild charm.

Want to really get off the beaten path? Hop on a ferry to Stewart Island/Rakiura, a nature lover’s haven with untouched beaches and one of the few places where you can spot a kiwi in the wild. Trust me, there’s nothing like the thrill of seeing a kiwi bird up close, especially when it’s in its natural habitat.

The Towns: Invercargill’s Vibe & Bluff’s Oyster Love 🏛️🦪

Invercargill, Southland’s largest town, is surprisingly artsy, with a laid-back vibe and cool spots like Queens Park—perfect for a chill afternoon. Wander through the town to find quirky cafés, local art, and little surprises around every corner. And if you’re a history buff, you’ll love learning about the region’s Māori heritage and European settler stories at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery.

Then there’s Bluff, New Zealand’s southernmost town. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the Bluff Oyster Festival, you’re in for a treat. Fresh, briny oysters served up with local flair, music, and good vibes—it’s basically an oyster lover’s paradise.

Hidden Gems: Lake Hauroko & the Southern Scenic Route 🌅🚗

One of my absolute favourite places in Southland has to be Lake Hauroko. It’s the country’s deepest lake, nestled in the most tranquil forest, with views that just feel otherworldly. It’s a little slice of peace, where you can kayak, fish, or just sit and soak up the beauty.

Driving the Southern Scenic Route is a must-do if you want to take in the diverse landscapes at your own pace. You’ll pass everything from rugged coastlines to green farmlands and remote beaches. Every stop offers a new experience, like ancient petrified forests, charming towns, and lookout points that’ll make you want to pull over every few minutes.
