Duffy Creek Route: A Wild West Coast Climb into the Clouds 🏔️🌧️
If you’re after a proper leg-burn and some solitude deep in the West Coast wilderness, the Duffy Creek Route delivers. This is not your average stroll — it’s a challenging, rewarding backcountry adventure that takes you from lush valley floors through steep forest climbs into the Paparoa Ranges.
Unmarked in places and demanding in others, this track is for experienced tampers or those wanting to push a bit beyond their comfort zone. You won’t find many people out here — just mossy trees, rushing creeks, and big mountain energy.
Where It Is 📍
The Duffy Creek Route is located near Punakaiki, in the Paparoa National Park, and is often used as part of access toward Mt Bovis or the Moonlight Range.
🛣️ Access: Park at the small pull-off near Duffy Creek Bridge, just north of Punakaiki along SH6.
🕒 Duration: Allow 6–8 hours return (depending on pace and conditions).
📏 Grade: Advanced tramping route — steep, rough, and unmarked in places.
The Route Itself 🌿
Into the Forest
The route begins innocently enough — following Duffy Creek through thick, beautiful West Coast bush. Expect to cross the creek multiple times (no bridges), so be prepared for wet boots from the start.
The Climb
The ascent is steep and relentless. This is classic West Coast tramping: slippery tree roots, muddy slopes, and hands-on scrambling. But as you gain elevation, the views begin to open up — revealing glimpses of the Paparoa Ranges, the sea, and dense valleys far below.
There are no huts on the route, but keen tampers can push higher toward Mt Bovis or link up with other tops for multi-day backcountry missions.
What You’ll Need 🎒
Good tramping boots (expect mud and water crossings)
Map + compass / GPS — this route is not marked or maintained
Warm, waterproof layers — this is the West Coast; weather changes fast
Plenty of snacks and water (creek water may be drinkable with treatment)
Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) — highly recommended in remote areas
Why I Loved It 💪💚
This track isn’t easy. It’s wild, wet, and a bit brutal — but that’s exactly what makes it magic. It reminded me that New Zealand still has places where the bush rules, and you earn every view. If you’re craving solitude, challenge, and a day completely off the grid, Duffy Creek Route is a gem hidden in plain sight.
Not for everyone — but unforgettable for those who go.
