Truman Track: Where Rainforest Meets the Wild West Coast 🌿🌊

Tucked away just north of Punakaiki, the Truman Track is one of those short walks that completely over-delivers. In under 20 minutes, you’ll go from dense, Jurassic-like rainforest to a dramatic cliffside overlooking the roaring Tasman Sea. It’s the West Coast in a nutshell — lush, raw, untamed, and unforgettable.

If you love places that surprise you with their beauty and power, Truman Track is a must-do.

Getting There 🚗

The Truman Track car park is located just 3 km north of Punakaiki, right off State Highway 6. It’s well-signposted and has a small parking area. From there, it’s a gentle walk through stunning native forest to the coast — suitable for most fitness levels and family-friendly.

What You’ll See 👀

A Track of Two Worlds

Rainforest Canopy: Walk beneath towering rimu and nikau palms, with native ferns lining your path.

Birdsong Everywhere: Tƫī, fantails, and bellbirds make this a mini sound sanctuary.

Clifftop Reveal: The forest suddenly opens up to a wide coastal view — dramatic limestone cliffs, sea spray, and layered rock formations below.

Beach Access

At low tide, a path leads down to the beach where you can explore sea caves, waterfalls, and wind-sculpted rock terraces. Just watch the tides and waves — this coast can turn wild fast!

đŸ”„ Blogger Tip: Visit at sunset for a breathtaking golden glow over the ocean and forest. You’ll likely have the place to yourself.

Know Before You Go 📝

Tide Watch: Only go down to the beach at low tide, and keep an eye on the swell.

Footwear: The track is well-maintained, but beach access can be slippery and rocky.

No Toilets: Plan accordingly — nearest facilities are back in Punakaiki.

Leave No Trace: It’s a fragile environment — pack out what you pack in.

Why I Loved It 💚

For such a short walk, the Truman Track felt epic. It’s not often you get rainforest, cliffs, and beach in one easy stroll — and with barely anyone around. The layered coastal rock formations reminded me of the Pancake Rocks, but here they felt untouched, ancient, almost secret.

This track is perfect for a spontaneous sunset stop, a mindful wander, or just a dose of natural beauty that doesn’t ask much from your legs but gives so much back.
