What to Expect 🥾

A Journey Through History and Nature

The Kirwans Track follows an old pack track once used by gold miners in the late 1800s. The trail is beautifully benched and winds through:

Lush podocarp and beech forest 🌳

Historic mining sites — including rusting relics and mine shafts (safely fenced off)

Native birdlife — kererū, tomtits, bellbirds, and more

Alpine tussock clearings with glimpses of snow-capped ranges

At the top, you’re rewarded with Kirwans Hut, perched on a ridge with a balcony view to die for.

Optional Extensions:

Climb to Kirwans Hill Summit for panoramic views (add 30–45 mins).

Loop out via Montgomerie Hut and the Waitahu Valley for a multi-day circuit.

Track Conditions & Tips 📝

Well-maintained track, gradual climb, but long — pace yourself!

Weather can change fast at higher elevations — bring warm layers.

DOC hut tickets or bookings are required for Kirwans Hut.

Water available at the hut (boil or treat before drinking).

Take your time — there’s plenty to see along the way.

Why I Loved It 💚

The Kirwans Track offers that perfect balance of effort and reward. You work your way steadily through a forest soaked in birdsong and history, only to emerge at the hut into a sweeping West Coast panorama. Sitting on that balcony with a hot drink, mist rolling over the hills — it’s the kind of moment that sticks with you long after the boots come off.

If you’re after a less-crowded Great Walk alternative with real depth and soul, Kirwans Track is a top pick.

It’s a shame it’s currently closed due to flood damage, but I hope it gets restored soon. How long do you think it might take for the repairs to be completed?
